An Excellent Hair Loss Treatment for Women

Hair Loss Treatment for Women

When most people think of hair loss they think of it as a problem for men. However, hair loss causes many problems for women, with more and more women suffering from thinning hair.

For this reason, we thought our female readers would like to start by reading reviews from other women who are using a product that is actually working.

Before we cover the various hair loss treatments for women, we thought a brief explanation about the different types of hair loss that women suffer from would be in order.

This is just an overview of the subject. Elsewhere on the site we go into more detail about specific female hair loss conditions, like male pattern baldness in women.

The major causes of female hair loss

Virtually all of the causes of female specific hair loss are due to hormonal imbalances or changes in the body. They include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

To stop hair loss completely, the underlying hormonal imbalance has to be addressed.

Taking action at an early stage is important. Hair takes a long time to grow, so once you have lost it can take up to a year before you get a full head of hair back.

Addressing the hormone imbalance takes time in itself. First, you need the diagnosis; then it takes time before the hormones come back into proper balance.

The problem is that by the time you get your hormones back to adequate levels, most of your hair could be gone. Therefore, it is important to use a good female hair loss product at the first sign of trouble.

Naturally, you should always see a doctor if you notice excessive hair loss, because it could be a sign of hormonal issues. As you will see below, it can also be a sign of disease.

In addition, the sooner you understand the underlying cause and deal with it, the more likely it is that you will get back a full head of hair.

Other problems to be aware of

There are other potential, underlying causes for hair loss in women. The list below is for informational purposes; and could apply to hair loss issues in both women and men.

They are important because this information will help you to select a female hair loss treatment that targets the underlying cause, and produces visible results.

  • Thyroid problems
  • Certain autoimmune diseases
  • Genetics
  • Side effect of medication

In the above cases, the underlying causes have to be diagnosed by your doctor and then addressed. In the meantime, we recommend considering a good product to slow down hair loss while you get the problem sorted out.

An overview of hair loss products for women

Below is a list of the most commonly used hair growth products for women.

Minoxidil (Rogaine) – This is applied directly to the scalp to stimulate hair growth. It is a high blood pressure medication; so, exactly why it can help with hair growth is not 100% understood.

Unfortunately, it does not work for all women, but it may be worth trying. The biggest problem is it is messy and it makes you look like you are wearing hair oil.  If your skin is sensitive you may also experience some irritation.

Androgen Receptor Inhibitors– These products inhibit the male hormones that sometimes lead to accelerated hair loss in women. They include Spironolactone (Aldactone), Cimetidine (Tagamet) and Cyproterone Acetate.

You will sometimes see these for sale online. However, remember that they are powerful drugs, so you should not take them without a prescription from your doctor. Taking them without medical supervision can lead to life threatening conditions.

Occasionally, doctors will prescribe certain oral contraceptives to help to slow hair loss. Again, you have to be careful. The older you are, the more at risk you are of side effects from taking oral contraceptives.

Ketoconazole (Nizoral) – Occasionally hair loss is caused by fungal scalp conditions, such as ringworm. Shampoos that contain Ketoconazole can help to kill off the fungus that is stopping the hair follicle from working properly.

Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) – Sometimes hair loss is caused by DHT that shrinks the hair follicle. DHT production relies on the presence of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme. Finasteride inhibits the production of the enzyme allowing hair growth to resume as normal over time.

As stated earlier, please remember to see a doctor if you suspect the underlying cause of your hair loss is disease related. Naturally, if you are on pre-existing medications you should check the list of ingredients for any potential adverse interactions with your prescription meds.
